Localized cryotherapy is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling in targeted areas of acute or localized pain. As opposed to whole-body cryotherapy which stimulates cold receptors all over the body, localized treatment is comparable to “icing” which isolates a particular area in order to trigger an anti-inflammatory response.
A local area treatment generally takes about 5-15 minutes. The clinician will use a hand-held device to direct the sub-zero air stream to a specific area of your body to reduce inflammation and pain, and speed healing. The benefits outweigh those of traditional at home icing, as the cold penetrates deeper and could decrease recovery time.
